The Invitation

You remember the first time you saw a real night sky.

Maybe a campground. A lake house. The night the power went out.

The Park Service has actually measured this: Big Bend has the darkest skies of any national park in the lower 48. Around 2,000 stars on a clear night. In most towns, a few hundred.

We're going on a new moon weekend — no moon at all to wash any of it out.

Whatever you've seen before, this is a different thing.

This is awe.

Awe quiets the brain's worry loop. It pulls your nervous system into a regulated state faster than almost anything else we know of. And it's trainable — which means we're going to talk about it, practice it, and send you home knowing how to find it again.

The Weekend

What we're actually doing out there

The Night Sky, Guided

A professional astronomer joins us for the night with real telescopes — not a phone app and a laser pointer. Saturn's rings, star clusters, the galactic core, and the kind of sky most people have only ever seen in photographs. Pull up a chair and stay out as long as you want. This is the centerpiece, and it's the reason for the dates.

Desert Trails, Every Level

Big Bend is six miles away and February is the best hiking month of the year. Trails for every level — including real elevation in the Chisos for anyone who came to climb something.

Long Nights by the Fire

Chris pours from a bourbon collection years in the making — bottles you won't find on a shelf, poured by someone who can tell you why they matter. Wine too, for anyone who'd rather.

The Food Is a Whole Thing

A grazing table the night you arrive. Smoked tenderloin from a Texas pitmaster. Chris's pozole. Dessert every night, because obviously.

The Awe Practice

This is the part you take home. You'll leave knowing three breathing techniques that shift your nervous system in under two minutes, a mobility and fascia sequence you can do on a hotel floor, and the actual method behind an awe walk. We teach it out here because the dark sky is the most reliable awe trigger there is. Learn it where it's easy, and you'll have access to it before your next meeting, or over your first cup of coffee. Optional, all of it — and yours to keep.

The Place

Willow House. Individual casitas built by hand into the desert, on nearly 300 acres, with nothing between you and the Chisos.

Single-story casitas set low into raw desert. The rock in the walls was collected from the property. The shade structures are dead ocotillo branches found on the land.

Design is one of the eight wonders — one of the things that reliably produces awe. You feel it before you can name it.

Six miles from the park entrance. Close enough to hike the South Rim and be back for a sunset dinner.

The Main House is the common ground — a full gourmet kitchen with room in the fridge and pantry for whatever you bring, plus living space, a coffee bar, and a fire pit outside.

Who This Is For

Come with someone. Come on your own. Either way, you'll find it.

Sixteen people. One fire. Nobody stays a stranger past the first dinner.

Shared attention amplifies experience — when people take in the same thing at the same moment, their heart rates and breathing fall into sync. Awe does the rest: it shifts you from me to us.

So come alone. You won't be.

Or bring your person. Couples, mothers and daughters, fathers and sons, sisters, two friends who've been saying we should really do a trip for six years.

All guests eighteen and over.

Your Hosts

Souls in tandem

Daina and Chris

Daina and Chris met on bikes — which is where the name comes from. That was fifteen years ago and not much has changed but the terrain.

They're known for the kind of gatherings people rearrange their calendars for. Long tables, food that takes all day, a fire that goes late, and a guest list that never wants to go home. This retreat is that instinct, moved to the desert.

Daina founded Master Method Collective, where she trains instructors and wellness professionals in the neuroscience of awe and nervous system regulation. She's led retreats from Costa Rica to the Spanish coast to the Oklahoma woods.

Chris takes the fire, the trails, and the bourbon — and can tell you why a bottle matters, which is different from telling you what it cost.

Questions

Before you book

How do I get there?

Most guests drive — roughly seven hours from Dallas or Austin, and about four and a half from El Paso, which is the easiest airport for a rental car and a supply stop. Midland/Odessa is about four hours. We'll send full travel notes and carpool options once you're booked.

How do payments work?

Three payments. Your casita is secured at booking, then two more on December 1 and January 10.

What if I need to cancel?

Full refund through November 15, 2026. After that your casita payment is non-refundable, since we've committed it to the property. Written notice required — full terms are on the booking page. Travel insurance is recommended.

What are the hikes like? I'm not much of a hiker.

There's something for every level. Gentle desert walking at an unhurried pace, frequent stops, no pressure to keep up with anyone — that's what most guests choose.

I'm a serious hiker. Will this be too easy?

No. Big Bend has some of the best hiking in Texas and February is the best month for it — real elevation in the Chisos, long days if you want them. Tell us when you book and we'll make sure the harder routes are on the table.

What if I just want to sleep in?

Then sleep in. Mornings are optional, afternoons are open, and nobody's taking attendance. Come to what you want to come to.

When do I arrive and leave?

Check in Thursday afternoon, check out Sunday morning. Three nights.

How does food work?

Nearly everything is handled. Dinner all three nights, light breakfast each morning with a stocked coffee bar, and lunch on the days we're on property. The one meal you'll pay for yourself is our group outing to the Terlingua Ghost Town — a long lunch on the porch where everyone covers their own tab. The main house also has a full gourmet kitchen and room in the fridge, so bring whatever you want to have on hand.

Is there free time? What else is nearby?

Yes — afternoons are deliberately open, and there's more out here than people expect. The Terlingua Ghost Town is a three-mile drive: old mining ruins, galleries, live music most nights, and the Starlight Theatre for a drink on the porch at sunset. Golfers should know that Black Jack's Crossing at Lajitas is about twenty minutes away — ranked the #1 course you can play in Texas by Golfweek and the Dallas Morning News, designed by Lanny Wadkins, with the Rio Grande running alongside it. There are also hot springs in the park, river trips, and horseback riding. All of it optional and on your own — bring a car and you'll have plenty to choose from.

What's the weather like in February?

Days in the 60s and 70s, nights near freezing. It's the best hiking month of the year — dry, clear, and mild. Bring layers, a real jacket, and boots. And a swimsuit: the pool is heated.
